Leveraging our strength of veteran teachers and high-calibre scholars in Chinese language education, international Chinese language education and Chinese linguistics, the Department of Chinese Language Studies undertakes teaching and research on Chinese language education and Chinese linguistics for a variety of programmes in the Faculty of Humanities and beyond.
CHL regards both knowledge transfer and competency building as the core departmental principles of education.
CHL identifies the following essential beliefs:
- Teachers not only deliver but also create knowledge; and
- Academic research is the foundation of high standard teaching.
We require each of our academic and teaching staff to develop high quality research in the fields of Chinese language education and/or Chinese linguistics which is reflected in our teaching.
We also emphasize academic training of its students in traditional Chinese language and culture, and nurture students’ ability to discover knowledge creatively and independently.
CHL promotes the modernization and the internationalization of research and teaching of Chinese linguistics and Chinese language education within and among Greater China regions, in addition to boosting academic exchanges among international Chinese language education and Chinese linguistic societies.
To become an influential research centre in Chinese language education and Chinese linguistics is our mid- to long-term development goal, aiming to facilitate international research outputs for Chinese language education, Chinese linguistics and the theory of teaching Chinese as the second language.
