【External Activity】''The Inherited Echo of Ancient Music'' Concert 2 ''Rhythms of Murals''

Events | Nov 2021

Since our establishment,Hong Kong Gaudeamus Dunhuang Ensemble (HKGDE) has worked with the industry to establish a Dunhuang music archive, providing a professional, systematic and in-depth academic platform for the Hong Kong public and even people around the world to access these documents collected by the ensemble, arousing public interest in Hong Kong's local creativity, providing a platform for Hong Kong's artistic producers, and hoping to raise international awareness of Chinese culture and contemporary music creation. It also aims to enhance international understanding of Chinese culture and contemporary music creation. To support the Dunhuang Music Archive in receiving new music works on a regular basis and to encourage young local composers to publish innovative works, the ensemble plans to organise an annual event "Call for scores" in collaboration with the composition and electronic music departments of local tertiary institutions to provide opportunities for young composers to create new songs based on the Dunhuang culture. This will not only increase the music archive, but also enhance the creative experience of young local composers, laying a solid foundation for their future musical endeavours.

The event "Call for scores" held in 2020 was well received and brought new compositions of Dunhuang music to the audience. The project was launched again in August 2021, with the Hong Kong Academy for Performing(APA) Arts and The Education University of Hong Kong(EdUHK). The ensemble has collected seven new pieces of music from students from APA and EdUHK for more than ten instruments, including the Xiao, Sheng, Guzheng, Pipa, Xiaoruan, Zhongruan, as well as the Dunhuang ancient musical instruments of Sun, the Tang dynasty Sheng, the Qu Xiang Pipa and Konghou.

In addition to premiering the compositions of the seven composing students, the ensemble will also perform music adapted from ancient tunes by the ensemble's composers-in-residence. The composers-in-residence and the composing students involved in the project will explain how to combine ancient rhythms and modern techniques to preserve traditional culture through contemporary artworks.
