School-based Counselling in Hong Kong

2020-02-11

The PS Department was honoured to welcome Dr Mark Harrison, the Deputy Principal of Victoria Shanghai Academy to deliver a seminar entitled Implementing a School-Based Counselling Programme in a Hong Kong secondary school: Challenges and Opportunities” on 18 January 2020.

In the seminar, Dr Harrison began by talking about the mental health of Hong Kong adolescents. Counselling in school settings, the sociocultural and organization context were also discussed. He suggested that the counselling theory and research studies previously conducted were all based on western culture. He commented that one must consider the cultural aspect to make school counselling effective. Hence more research studies should be conducted among the Asian cultures. Lastly, Dr Harrison shared his experience of implementing a school-based counselling service in a secondary school in Hong Kong and how we can create a “counselling culture” in school. The seminar was highly interactive and both staff and students enjoyed the talk.
