Dr. Yeung Siu Sze Susanna, Associate Vice President (Quality Assurance) and Associate Professor at the Department of Psychology, won a grant of $4,953,800 from the Innovation and Technology Committee (ITC). Supported by the Innovation and Technology Fund for Better Living (FBL), Dr. Yeung will conduct a 3-year project entitled “Social Robot for English Language Learning among Young Learners”. The project aims to promote the learning of second language through R&D of a social robot prototype.
Dr. Yeung will work on the project with her team, which includes EdUHK's Prof John Lee Chi Kin, Dr. Yanjie Song, and Dr. Daisy Di Zou, as well as external members. Children in kindergartens and primary schools will use the robot for social/language interactions. Training will be provided to teachers who use the robot in supporting English learning. After project completion, the prototype robots will be stationed in EdUHK laboratory for research and community education purposes. These robots will be further used in knowledge transfer activities which aim to benefit the community and education activities.
The FBL is a scheme for funding innovation and technology projects which will make people's daily living more convenient, comfortable and safer, or address the needs of specific community groups.
