Concepts of Ghosts, Spirits and Sacrificial Ritual of Han Yu – Focusing on Han Yu’s sacrificial writings to City-Gods (韓愈的鬼神和祭禮觀念──以城隍神祭文為中心)
Han Yu is the most important Kuwen (ancient prose) writer in the Tang dynasty. He also highlighted the relationship between “Wen” (literature) and “Tao”(way), and regarded himself as a “pure Confucianist”. Gods, ghosts and spirits are traditional concepts of Confucianism. In the Book of Rites(禮記) and Tso Chuan(左傳) there are a large quantity of narrations regard to the rites of worship gods, spirits and ghosts. Besides, the ritual system of Datang Kaiyuan Ceremony(大唐開元禮) established a ranking system, that different officials should worship different gods accordingly. As a regional inspector of ChaoChou(潮州), Han Yu worshipped and prayed to the city-gods, and worshipped different gods in different regions. He wrote a lot of sacrificial articles, which were obviously a practice of his concepts of Wen and Tao. So, what are the features of Han Yu’s sacrificial writings? Also, what was the relationship between his sacrificial views and his understanding of “WenTao”? Last but not least, how did he practice his views of “WenTao” through the sacrificial writings and rituals? This research project aims to investigate the following questions and issues: (1) Han Yu was the only person who used “Joumao”(柔毛) and “Kanglien”(剛鬣) as sacrifices to worship city-god. Why did he do that? This research project aims to explain and clarify the special meaning of this rite used by Han Yu. (2) City-gods are not traditional concepts of spirits (god-ghost) in the Five Classics. As a pure Confucianist, what was the attitude of Han Yu towards city-gods? As a case study, this research will also illustrate features of thought of Han Yu about the relationship between his faith of Confucianism and his advocacy of theory of WenTao. (3) This research also aims to review other discourses of ghosts and spirits by Han Yu, which is essential to re-evaluate his views towards TienTao(way of heaven), as well as the significance to his understanding and practice of WenTao. (4) This research is a core background study of the PI’s ECS project: Ghosts, Spirits and Strangeness in the Northern Sung Kuwen: New discussion for the concept of Kuwen Movement’s “way of literature”.

God and Evolution: Sun Yat Sen's Viewpoints of Christianity after 1887
The project is basic on a nature of “problem solving”, that is: there is a big argument about the faith and evolutionary view of Sun Yat Sen. In the past decades, some experts insist Sun was a devoted Christian; on the other hand, quite a lot of experts declare that Sun gave up his faith as he became a Darwinism and denied the discourse of “God made the world in 6 days” that written in Genesis. By studying the works of Sun Yat Sen and the books that had been read by Sun, as well as the viewpoints of his teacher and friends on “the relationship between religion and evolution”, this project is going to find out what is the truth and accurate description about Sun’s attitude towards Christianity.
