The objectives of this project are as follows:
- To promote popular culture: Popular culture is a focus of LCS and represents a significant part of HK’s cultural legacy. Centered on Anita Mui, this book project aims to highlight the unique characteristics of HK’s pop culture, which was internationally influential and is still appreciated by a transregional audience. The project will analyze and promote this vibrant culture.
- To enhance cultural industry: The cultural industry is a growing economic sector, increasingly valued by governments in numerous countries and receiving significant academic attention. Within our faculty, the cultural industry is a key area of study. For example, the MA Programme in Digital Humanities for Cultural Professionals, established last year, focuses on the cultural industry in the digital age. By examining the factors of the success of HK’s pop culture, this project aims to contribute to the future development of HK’s cultural industry.
- To develop the silver economy: The silver economy is a key policy priority for the HK SAR Government and aligns with our university’s Strategic Topics Grant priorities. This book project focuses on Anita Mui, whose heyday was in the 1980s. Those who experienced this era are now aged fifty to sixty or older. Many of them are avid readers and nostalgic for “the golden age of HK culture.” They are one of the primary target readers of this book.
- To develop Greater Bay Area: Our university is committed to promoting the development of the Greater Bay Area. Commercial Press has extensive experience in selling books in mainland China, particularly in the GBA. This book will be available on mainland’s online platforms, promoting cultural integration among cities in the GBA, especially given the growing interest in Cantopop among mainland audiences in recent years.
