As an education institute, the HKIEd recognises that the outbreak
of SARS was an invaluable opportunity for learning. With good
guidance, the younger generation of Hong Kong would be able
to transform what had been a crisis into an opportunity for
developing new horizons for learning. To make this a reality,
the HKIEd initiated a community-wide project entitled "Learning
from SARS and Beyond" in May 2003, targeting all students
in secondary schools, primary schools and kindergartens. This
special project was supported or sponsored by government departments
and various organisations, including the Education and Manpower
Bureau, Hong Kong Education City, the Hong Kong Museum of
History and the Hong Kong and China Gas Company. The aim of
the project was to encourage students to record what they
had experienced and witnessed during the outbreak and reflect
on the crisis, using different modes of presentation via various
types of media.

The legacy of SARS is not too far away from us. We have to
learn from the past to react for today and even to influence
the future. During the SARS crisis, what we said and what
we did have all become part of our history. Our analysis of
the crisis, our feelings and reactions towards it are sure
to influence the future development of our society.
History does not necessarily exist in
the adult world alone. History only becomes holistic and solid
when it is enriched by views from the younger generation.
History is not what is recorded in minute
and lengthy detail in musty tomes. It can be a picture, a
note or a verbal remark. As long as it is something that reminds
us of what has happened, it is history itself.
Let us, together with all students of
Hong Kong, learn from SARS and beyond.
