From 16–18 December 2024, the Faculty of Education and Human Development (FEHD) at EdUHK and the Faculty of Education at East China Normal University (ECNU) co-hosted the 3rd Asian Education Doctoral Student Institute (AEDSI) in hybrid mode on the EdUHK Tai Po Campus.
With the theme “Doctoral Journey and Sustainability: Research and Future Development”, the event attracted over 180 student participants, with 40 in-person participants from 15 institutions and over 140 online participants from 49 institutions across Asia and beyond. A planning committee of nine doctoral students from EdUHK and ECNU, under the advisorship of SEC’s Dr LIU Duo, invited 14 academics to give talks, workshops, and lead student discussions.
Dr Emma Buchtel, Associate Dean (International Engagement) of FEHD, welcomed the attendees and highlighted the importance of the event in overcoming the challenges and taking advantage of the opportunities facing doctoral students today. “By bringing together such a vibrant community, we aim to empower students to navigate their academic journeys while building lasting networks”, Dr Buchtel stated.
Prof Chen Shuangye, Associate Dean of ECNU, emphasised how AEDSI provides a vital platform for dialogue and knowledge exchange between EdUHK and ECNU, as well as among doctoral students and scholars across Asia. She noted that the event was an invaluable opportunity for doctoral students to cultivate research partnerships.
14 distinguished academics from EdUHK, ECNU, and South China Normal University shared their insights on a wide range of topics, including cultivating a growth mindset, fostering well-being, effective research dissemination, the role of education in sustainable development, and the integration of AI in education.
The event fostered rich discussion and knowledge exchange among doctoral students and faculty, contributing to students’ professional development, networking, and interregional integration. FEHD remains committed to organising further activities in partnership with other universities to provide ongoing support for doctoral students across Hong Kong, mainland China, and the wider Asian region.
