Sustainable Commuting

The University is committed to promoting sustainable commuting and providing convenient, accessible and lower-carbon travel options for students, staff and visitors. Through its public transport connections, shuttle bus and staff bus services, EV charging facilities and bicycle racks, the University supports shared, electric and active modes of transport. These initiatives help reduce reliance on single-occupancy private vehicles, minimise transport-related emissions, improve air quality and promote campus wellbeing.

The University encourages all students, staff and visitors to consider public transport, University bus services, electric vehicles, cycling or other lower-carbon options when travelling to and from campus. Together, individual travel choices contribute to a more connected, inclusive and sustainable campus while supporting the University’s broader sustainability objectives and climate action commitments.

Public Transport Connections

The campus is served by a range of KMB bus routes and Green Minibus services, providing direct connections between EdUHK, nearby MTR stations and major districts across Hong Kong. These services connect the University with the wider public transport network and offer convenient alternatives to private car travel.

The University encourages students, staff and visitors to use public transport when travelling to and from campus. Shared transport can help reduce the number of private vehicles on the road, improve transport efficiency and contribute to lower carbon emissions and better air quality.

University Shuttle and Staff Bus Services

To further support sustainable commuting, the University provides shuttle bus and staff bus services connecting the campus with key locations. These services offer convenient shared-transport options for students and staff, particularly for journeys to and from transport interchanges and other important destinations.

University-operated bus services make sustainable commuting more convenient and accessible for the campus community. By choosing these services instead of travelling alone by private car, campus users can contribute to the more efficient use of transport resources and help reduce the environmental impact of daily commuting.

Supporting the Transition to Electric Vehicles

The University is also supporting the transition to cleaner road transport by providing electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities in its car park. Approximately 50% of the parking spaces are equipped with EV chargers, encouraging vehicle owners to consider switching from conventional petrol or diesel vehicles to electric vehicles.

More than 50% of vehicles registered in the University’s car park are now electric vehicles. This growing level of EV adoption reflects increasing awareness of low-emission transport among campus users and supports the University’s efforts to promote cleaner mobility. The provision of EV charging infrastructure helps create a supportive environment for vehicle owners who choose electric transport and contributes to the wider transition towards lower-carbon transportation.

Encouraging Cycling and Active Travel

The University provides 42 bicycle racks  along Upper Spine Road and outside the University Resident Centre (URC), to support low-carbon commuting options for both students and staff. Cycling is an environmentally friendly and low-carbon mode of transport that reduces reliance on motor vehicles while promoting physical activity and wellbeing.

Located in Tai Po, the University is close to some of the best-known and most popular paths of Hong Kong’s New Territories Cycle Track Network. The network offers scenic, mostly flat and largely traffic-free coastal routes, providing an attractive environment for recreational cycling, active travel and exploration of the surrounding area. The availability of nearby cycling routes, together with bicycle parking facilities on campus, helps make cycling a practical and enjoyable option for members of the University community.
