Empowering AI Natives through IDLE and GenAI in Rural Indonesia

On October 6, 2025, the ELE Research Team, in collaboration with our Indonesian university partner and TEFLIN, delivered a professional development workshop at SMP Negeri 1 Dagangan, a remote-area school. Under the theme “Deep Learning and IDLE for AI Natives,” the team shared cutting-edge research on Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE) and guided teachers on designing meaningful IDLE experiences for today’s AI-native learners. The team also introduced middle school students to free, voice-based GenAI tools like Copilot and ChatGPT, showing how these can become their after-school English conversation partners. Notably, around 10% of students (3 per class) did not have mobile phones. Together with teachers and edtech companies, the team explored low-cost, locally adapted solutions to ensure no learner is left behind.

ELE remains dedicated to turning research into real-world impact—empowering teachers, students, and communities through innovation and care.
