Promoting the physical activity of primary school students

2020-06-19

Inadequate physical activity puts children at risk for a wide range of health problems. Therefore, the Department of Early Childhood Education invited Professor Chris Lonsdale from the Australian Catholic University to host an online talk on iPLAY—a school-based intervention programme promoting the physical activity of primary school students.

In the talk, Professor Lonsdale described the online training mediated by iPLAY, specifically how it helps teachers use specific strategies design fun-filled lessons and promote the physical activity of primary school students. He further talked about a randomized controlled trial which involved some 1,200 students from more than 130 schools and showed the effectiveness of iPLAY in promoting children’s health. Finally, he shared practical tips on how to implement randomized controlled trials and retain participants and schools in these trials. He suggested collaborating with the education authority, such as the Bureau of Education, and providing certificates that acknowledge the participation of teachers in professional training.
