Promoting children’s self-regulation through music and movement

2019-02-20

Research shows that self-regulation is crucial to child development. How can parents and teachers promote children’s self-regulation? Dr Kate Williams, Senior Research Fellow in the School of Early Childhood and Inclusive Education, Queensland University of Technology, says the answer is rhythm and dance!

In a seminar organised by the Department of Early Childhood Education, Dr William shared her work on music, play, and child self-regulation. She first introduced theory and research on simple beat synchronization, systematic music engagement, and professional music therapy, which are shown to have positive impacts on children’s regulation of attention, emotions, behaviors, and even sleep! Dr William then directed attention to the webpage of Rhythm and Movement for Self-Regulation, which provides free access to teaching materials that use rhythms and dance to engage children and promote their self-regulation (https://ramsrblog.wordpress.com). As a music therapist herself, Dr William also demonstrated how music and movement can be used in day to day teaching to help children grow and deal with challenges!

The Department of Early Childhood Education has been keeping its students and staff members informed of timely ways to support child development!
