Use of Data in the

Enhancement of Learning and Teaching

Ensuring the quality of student learning and teaching lies at the heart of the University’s core mission. By systematically leveraging a wide range of internal and external data sources, the University develops informed strategies and policies related to learning and teaching, and programmes and units devise targeted improvement plans based on relevant data insights. These processes are supported by the University’s well-structured committee framework, as well as its quality assurance (QA) and enhancement (QE) mechanisms.

  • Use of Data to Inform Learning and Teaching
  • A wide range of data, including the following, are used to review and enhance academic programmes and student experiences:
  • Performance Measures (PMs), University-specific Key Performance Indicators (UKPIs) and Performance Indicators (PIs)
  • Student feedback data, e.g. New Student Survey, Student Evaluation of Teaching, Programme Evaluation Questionnaire, student evaluation of Generic Intended Learning Outcomes, Survey on Online Learning Experience, Survey Questionnaire on Non-local (Overseas/Mainland) Learning Experience, student feedback received at Staff–Student Consultative Meeting, other student surveys
  • Staff feedback data, e.g. feedback from field experience/internship supervisors, staff surveys
  • Graduate feedback data, e.g. Graduate Employment Survey, Institutional Research on Graduates
  • Employer feedback data, e.g. Institutional Research on Graduates
  • Internship and field experience partner feedback data, e.g. student intern performance evaluation, feedback on student teachers’ performance
  • External experts and academics reports, e.g. programme external reviewers, programme external examiners, external members of Faculty Advisory Committees
  • Programme data, e.g. reports on Grade Point Average and First Class Honours, Programme Outcomes Assessment, attrition rates
  • Learning and Teaching Plan
  • The University’s Learning and Teaching Plan (L&T Plan) is designed to enhance student learning outcomes by developing strategic areas in learning and teaching. It is usually developed and implemented on a triennial basis. Indicators and targets are set as appropriate to drive initiatives for items/areas under the L&T Plan. Respective units are required to devise their own plans for achieving the indicators and targets set out in the University’s L&T Plan. Progress is reviewed on an annual basis.
  • Committee Structure Supporting the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching and Quality Assurance
  • The Task Force on Academic Management Information and Data Management System (TFAMIDMS) is a platform for deliberation on PMs and PIs under the Academic Management Information System (AMIS) and related data management and surveys. Chaired by the Vice-President (Academic) (VP(AC)), the Task Force comprises all of the Vice-Presidents, who are line managers and have direct oversight of their respective PMs/UKPIs/PIs. These responsible parties review progress towards set targets and provide comments, share observations, and discuss recommendations and follow-up actions during meetings. As part of their role, they are expected to consider and implement plans and follow-up actions within their respective boards / committees / units.

The Academic Board (AB) and its committees are responsible for QA and QE policies, principles, regulations, plans and procedures at the University level. They review University-level data to devise policies/plans and/or introduce measures for quality enhancement. At the programme and course levels, Programme Committees and Heads of Departments receive data on the quality of programmes and courses and implement and/or recommend changes as needed. If necessary, feedback data received at the University level is passed to the faculty, programme and/or course levels through relevant AB committees or pertinent mechanisms for response and follow-up actions, and vice versa. This ensures a dynamic and responsive QA framework that fosters continuous review and enhancement of student learning and teaching.
