ECE and CCFS promote child socioemotional competence in economically disadvantaged families

2019-11-25

Socioemotional competence is crucial for positive child development. Therefore, in an extended project, the Department of Early Childhood Education (ECE) and the Centre for Child and Family Science (CCFS), Faculty of Education and Child Development (FEHD), will run an evidence based programme to promote the socioemotional competence of children in 24 kindergartens located in economically disadvantaged districts.

The project, titled “3Es: Early Prevention, Early Identification, and Early Intervention: A School-Based Support Model of Social-Emotional Development for Kindergarten Children,” began in 2015-2016 with the support of the Simon K. Y. Lee Foundation at 19 million, seeking to develop an evidence based programme to help local kindergarteners learn how to better regulate emotions and build relationships. Funded at 7.3 million, the extension stage began in 2019-2020, seeking to disseminate the programme among economically disadvantaged families to sustain its social impact.

“With the right support, children from any backgrounds can have a better future,” said Head of ECE and Director of CCFS, Prof Kevin Chung. “We want to provide such support in the early years, together with parents and teachers.
