Learn to play; play to learn

2019-08-16

Together with Playright, the Department of Early Childhood Education (ECE) organised a 3-day Playwork Certificate Training Workshop for its students during summer 2019.

The workshop covers theories of play and their classroom application. Our students reflected upon their prior learning in their training as an early childhood educator, pondering why play is needed for children’s development, discussing the definition of play, sharing their experiences of facilitating play in local classrooms, and coming up with different forms of play that may fit the local context. Below are some quotes from our students:

“We can put different toys together to enhance children’s creativity and increase the value of play.”

“We can observe children’s intentions and behaviors, and allow for different ways of play—often times adults concern too much about safety and stop children too quickly from devising their own play!”

“In local kindergartens, parents place high emphasis on rules and discipline during children’s play. How can we ensure rules and discipline without disrupting children’s flow of play? We can use the re-direction skills to shift children’s attention.”
