We are pleased to announce that ECE’s Assistant Head (Field Experience), Dr Katie Law Kit-ying, has won the Award for Excellent Field Experience (FE) Supervision under the FE Supervision Appreciation Scheme for Semester 1, 2024/25.
This award has been offered by the School Partnership and Field Experience Office (SPFEO) and Centre for Learning, Teaching, and Technology (LTTC) since 2019/20. And this is the third time Dr Law has received this award.
FE is a vital component of pre-service teacher education programmes, encompassing key elements such as Block Practice and the FE Portfolio. The Block Practice period is divided into two phases—Block Practice I and Block Practice II. During each phase, students are placed in kindergartens where they apply their theoretical knowledge and develop practical skills. Throughout this period, each student receives ongoing support from at least one FE supervisor.
Dr Law expressed gratitude for receiving the award once again. She shared that her approach to supervision involves continuously assessing students’ learning needs, guiding them to see a more comprehensive picture, and encouraging self-reflection. This approach fosters critical thinking and empowers students to effectively address challenges they encounter during their Block Practice, such as addressing the diverse needs of children and developing collaboration skills.
She reminds her students that this is their first working experience in a real classroom setting and that they will inevitably face limitations and difficulties. However, she emphasises that they also possess unique strengths and many opportunities to learn and grow alongside the children they teach.
Dr Law further highlighted the collaborative spirit within the ECE Department, where colleagues are deeply committed and passionate about nurturing students into professional educators. She feels honoured to be part of such a dedicated and supportive team.
