Our History

The Department of Early Childhood Education (ECE) has a 60-year long history with humble beginnings as a kindergarten training class at a teachers’ college. We are the pioneering force behind early childhood education development in Hong Kong.

1950-1952 - Northcote College of Education started a kindergarten teacher training class, which was the first official kindergarten teacher training in Hong Kong.

1994 - Northcote College of Education merged with four other teacher training colleges to become the autonomous Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd), the predecessor of EdUHK.

1999 - HKIEd launched its first three-year mixed-mode Bachelor of Education (Honours) Early Childhood Education Program.

2010 - Graduate school was established and HKIEd offers postgraduate programs for early childhood education.

2016 - The HKIEd was awarded the university title and changed its name to The Education University of Hong Kong, becoming the 10th university in Hong Kong and the 8th publicly funded university.

2022 - EdUHK ranked 3rd in Asia and 17th in the world in Education, according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022.

Today - The ECE Department has trained more than 80% of local kindergarten teachers and is one of the largest early childhood education departments in Asia and the world.
