Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) Awardee

2022-06-27

The Department of Early Childhood Education (ECE) wishes to congratulate Miss Pan Yingying on winning the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS). 300 PhD Fellowships will be awarded in the 2022/23 academic year and Miss Pan is being one of them. This serves as a recognition of her academic excellence and research ability, a remarkable milestone and a promising start to a new journey. Carrying an annual stipend of HK$322,800 and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,500 per year, this fellowship will fund Miss Pan’s PhD study for a period up to three years. Established by the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong in 2009, the HKPFS aims at attracting the best and brightest students around the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong's universities.

Started playing the piano at 4, Miss Pan was admitted to Xinghai Conservatory of Music, Mainland China, to study for her bachelor’s in music education. During her bachelor's study, she obtained the Orff Music Course Tutor certificate from the International Early Childhood Education Institute (IECEI) and the Certificate of Completion for Orff-Schulwerk Teacher Training (Level 1) by the Orff Professional Committee of the Chinese Musicians Association. After being awarded the title of Outstanding Graduate and the honor of Excellent Intern Leader in her senior year, Miss Pan received a scholarship from Teachers College, Columbia University, a world-renowned university to pursue her master's study in Music and Music Education and managed to publish an article on early childhood music education as the first author in the Journal of General Music Education.

In Hong Kong, Miss Pan had a great experience working as a Research Assistant in the ECE Department on an early childhood music education project led by Dr Alfredo Bautista, Associate Professor and Associate Head in the ECE Department, who has a similar music background with Miss Pan. This experience, adding to her other teaching and research experiences, gave Miss Pan more perspectives in looking at early childhood music education and made her more determined to study in this field. Later on, with the great support from family, she chose to move forward and pursue her doctoral study in ECE department under the supervision of Dr Alfredo Bautista. We sincerely wish Miss Pan a success in her study and really make a difference in the world of children’s education and development.
