The Department of Early Childhood Education (ECE) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) successfully held the Higher Diploma in Early Childhood Education Summer Day Camp on 4 July 2026 at the Tai Po Campus, attracting nearly 80 enthusiastic secondary school students. Designed for local secondary school students from form 4 to 6, the camp aimed to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the distinctive features of early childhood education and the educational philosophy of "learning through play" through a variety of experiential activities.
The event began with a warm and engaging ice-breaking session, where participants got to know one another through interactive activities in a lively and relaxed atmosphere. This was followed by an early childhood music workshop led by Dr Pauline Chan Po-lin, Associate Head (Teaching), together with other instructors. Through movement, rhythm, and creative expression, students experienced the joy and power of music while learning how music can support young children's holistic development.
During the camp, students also created handmade sunflowers, symbolising the growth of young lives towards light and hope. Through this activity, they gained a deeper appreciation of the values of care, encouragement, and inspiration that underpin early childhood education. After lunch, participants took part in the “Chill Walk around EdUHK” Campus Exploration Activity, completing a series of challenges across the campus. The activity not only enhanced their observation skills and teamwork abilities but also helped them become more familiar with the University's learning environment and campus culture.
The final session featured current students of the Higher Diploma in Early Childhood Education programme serving as “student teachers”, guiding participants through a range of early childhood teaching activities. Through games, interaction, and role-playing, participants gained first-hand experience of how early childhood educators design engaging and inspiring learning experiences, allowing them to better understand the core concept that “play is learning.”
During the closing session, including a programme briefing, Q&A and sharing segment, participants actively reflected on their learning experiences and engaged with academic staff and students to learn more about the curriculum and further study opportunities offered by the Higher Diploma in Early Childhood Education programme. Many students remarked that the day camp had enhanced their understanding of the early childhood education profession and helped them recognise the important role that early childhood educators play in nurturing the next generation. The experience also inspired their interest in pursuing a future career in early childhood education and contributing to society through education.
