ECE Department Hosts Finland Learning Trip to Foster Global Vision and Advance Sustainable Education

2026-07-08

The Department of Early Childhood Education (ECE) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) organised the study tour “Preparing to Be Global Citizens: An In-depth Learning Journey in Finland” from June 1 to 8, 2026. Led by Dr Pauline Chan Po-lin, Associate Head (Teaching) and Mr Edward Lai Nok-hang, Lecturer I, and 13 students embarked on an exchange experience centered on global vision and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During a visit to Helsinki Kamu Early Education Kindergarten, students gained insights into Finland’s nature-based approach to early childhood education and reflected on how children’s curiosity is nurtured across different cultural contexts. The itinerary also included visits to the University of Helsinki and Aalto University, where students enhanced their educational judgment, teamwork, and interpersonal skills through discussions and peer collaboration.

The journey enabled students to transform the concept of SDGs into tangible educational practices, experiencing the integration of nature exploration, environmental conservation, and civic awareness. Finland’s “slow living” lifestyle further inspired them to consider the patience and depth required in early childhood education.

ECE Department has long been committed to expanding international learning opportunities. With the support of the Global Learning Enhancement Fund (GLEF) and the Global Experiential Learning Award (GELA), several overseas study tours have been organised this academic year, including visits to Melbourne, Helsinki, and Edinburgh. These initiatives aim to deepen students’ global perspectives and educational reflections, encouraging them to bring their experiences back to the classroom and transform them into inspiring teaching practices.
