Last Saturday (7th March 2026), the Department of Early Childhood Education at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) collaborated with "Bring Me a Book Hong Kong" to host the "READ—Connect" community outreach activity. Students from full-time Early Childhood Education programmes (ECE) designed and led activities to promote picture book reading among local families.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of "Bring Me a Book"—a parent-child reading organization that was established on the EdUHK campus two decades ago. To mark this milestone, the foundation donated 100 Chinese and English picture books from the Feng Zikai Chinese Children’s Picture Book Award to the EdUHK Library. The founders and their children attended the event. Their children were among the organization’s first young readers and have since grown into adults, showing the organization’s lasting impact on the reading heritage.
15 ECE students participated as parent-child reading ambassadors. They received professional training and conducted interactive story sessions using sensory play with 20 families. Children explored story characters and their emotions through hands-on experiences. Parents also learned that reading can extend beyond storytelling—using methods such as five-senses strategies can support young children’s comprehension.
This event provided ECE students with an opportunity to apply child-centered theories in a community setting. Engagement with the integration of the 'Fun Reading' approach in pre-school settings to inspire more children to engage with books.
