Faculty members and students from Ateneo de Davao University, Philippines visits PS

2024-02-27

We were delighted to host a visit for 2 faculty members and 20 undergraduate Psychology major students from Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU), Philippines, who travelled to EdUHK and Hong Kong in an internationalization visit organized by the Ateneo Internationalization for Mindanao Office. The visit took place on 5th February 2024 as part of their ADDU AIM International Study Visit: PsychEd @ Hong Kong.

The visitors were welcomed in the morning by Dr. Emma E. Buchtel, who introduced the department and its educational programmes.  An enlightening library tour followed, during which the ADDU students were introduced to the extensive resources available at EdUHK's Library. The visiting delegation enjoyed the vast collection of materials and the modern equipment and discovery rooms geared towards STEM education.

Following the library tour, the group embarked on a campus tour led by two enthusiastic student ambassadors from the PS department’s BSocSc(Psy) programme. The ADDU students were impressed by the contemporary infrastructure and serene atmosphere of the EdUHK campus. Through the student ambassadors' insights, the ADDU students gained a comprehensive understanding of the education system and student life in Hong Kong.

A standout event during the visit was a laboratory meeting, where the ADDU students had the privilege of interacting with EdUHK's psychology faculty and researchers. One of our PhD students presented her latest research progress, offering valuable insights into the theory and research around social media and its impact on well-being across cultures. The visiting students and professors actively engaged in the ensuing discussion and later commented on the excellent research atmosphere of the department. The presentation encouraged the students to consider pursuing research opportunities, sparking their enthusiasm for academic exploration.

After the lab meeting, the delegation enjoyed a "Dim Sum / Yum Cha" lunch, providing an opportunity for cultural exchange over a shared meal. The day concluded with the delegations being invited to sit in on lectures delivered by Dr. Tong Xiuhong and Dr. Wong Ting Yat respectively, focusing on topics in the PSY2020 course "Human Development Across the Lifespan." The ADDU students were captivated by thought-provoking student presentations, which challenged their existing knowledge and fostered engaging discussion in the classrooms. Through the lectures and student-led activities, the ADDU students gained a firsthand experience of undergraduate studies in Hong Kong, and BSocSci(Psy) students enjoyed the opportunity to join in discussions with the ADDU students.

We extend our gratitude to Prof. Henzel T. Embalzado and Prof. Gina Lamzon from ADDU for their visit and collaboration, as well as to the EdUHK library for providing the library tour to our esteemed visitors, the two student volunteers Yip Pui Yan Tracy and Tang Wa Lun Warren, and the hosts from the PS department staff who helped make the visit fruitful and enjoyable for all.
