The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) is currently undertaking 178 ongoing research projects, including the previously awarded projects and those newly funded under the latest Research Grants Council’s (RGC) funding exercises.

With a total funding of HK$111.8 million awarded by the RGC and other funding bodies*, these projects cover a wide range of subject disciplines, ranging from education, humanities and arts, psychology and linguistics, social and behavioural sciences and physical sciences to health.

In the RGC’s General Research Fund (GRF) and Early Career Scheme (ECS) funding exercises 2017-18, EdUHK emerged as the first in terms of both the number of funded projects and the awarded amount in the subject discipline of Education. A total of 33 EdUHK projects were awarded funding under GRF and ECS, amounting to HK$18.28 million. Other highlights are as follows:

  • Eleven out of the 31 awarded projects in the subject discipline of Education under the GRF and ECS went to EdUHK, with total funding of over HK$7 million, representing more than one third of the overall funding amount;
  • EdUHK also ranked first in terms of the number of funded projects in the Humanities and Arts, and Psychology and Linguistics under the ECS;
  • In the subject discipline of Humanities and Arts under the ECS, EdUHK had five successful projects, which were awarded a total of HK$1.17 million, for a success rate of 83.3 per cent, which is 28.6 per cent higher than the overall success rate of all publicly funded universities. EdUHK ranked first in terms of the number of funded projects and third in terms of the awarded amount in the same subject discipline;
  • Regarding the subject discipline of Psychology and Linguistics under the ECS, EdUHK had two successful projects out of its 11 submissions with a total awarded amount of HK$0.87 million, representing almost one third of the overall funding awarded in this discipline. Again, EdUHK ranked first in terms of the number of funded projects and second in terms of the awarded amount.

Professor Lui Tai-lok, Vice President (Research and Development) of EdUHK, said, “The encouraging performance of EdUHK’s researchers is the best testimony to the University’s robust research capacity in Education and complementary disciplines, thanks to the good synergy between our senior academics and early career scholars specialising in different academic disciplines.”
