EdUHK Launches STEM Education Conference-cum-Carnival 2016

About 800 students and teachers from around 300 local secondary and primary schools gathered at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) today (16 December) for the start of the STEM Education Conference-cum-Carnival 2016

Jointly organised by the Department of Science and Environmental Studies and Department of Mathematics and Information Technology at EdUHK, the event is co-organised by the Hong Kong Association of Science and Mathematics Education, Hong Kong Education City, the Faculty of Education at The University of Hong Kong, the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Education Bureau (EDB) of the HKSAR Government. Supporting organisations include twelve professional teaching and government bodies and environmental conservation groups.

School leaders, curriculum developers, teachers, teacher educators and other stakeholders held workshops and seminars today to share their experiences in STEM education, covering topics such as 3D printing and VR, among others. Dr Susan Nicholson-Dykstra and Dr Lee K. Carole from the University of Maine at Farmington (USA) discussed their advanced international experiences in implementing STEM education with around 400 local teachers. Mr Ng Wing-shui from the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology at EdUHK talked about the application of drone photography and videography in STEM education in his workshop, showing around 70 teachers and students how to use drones.

In the carnival tomorrow, students will set up around 50 exhibition or games booths to demonstrate successful STEM trials or experiments. Students from EdUHK will present their creative STEM inventions, while those from Lok Sin Tong Ku Chiu Man Secondary School will show their aquaponics system that features the innovative idea of replacing vegetables with herbs.

In recognition of participating students’ innovation in STEM education, various awards will be presented to outstanding booths, namely the Best Problem Solving in STEM Award, Gold Team Award in Mathematics, Best STEM Innovation Award, Best STEM for Environmental Protection Award and Best Integrative STEM Award.
