SSPS Students Build Life-Saving Skills and Career Readiness through St. John First Aid Certificate Course
More than 30 local and non-local SSPS undergraduate students participated in a four-day First Aid Certificate Course jointly organized by SSPS and Hong Kong St. John Ambulance. Held on 26 – 27 September and 3 – 4 October 2026, the course provided students with the opportunity to work towards a recognized first aid certificate while developing practical skills for responding to emergencies.
Combining essential knowledge with extensive hands-on practice, the course covered emergency response, adult and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway management, wound care, bandage application, fracture management, and the safe handling and transportation of injured persons. Through demonstrations and repeated practice, students learned to assess different situations, respond appropriately and provide immediate assistance when needed.
Beyond its life-saving value, first aid training can also enhance students’ career readiness. The knowledge and practical experience gained through the course are particularly relevant to careers involving responsibility for and interaction with others, including education, social and community services, event coordination and other public-facing roles. Upon successfully passing the examination, the recognized first aid certificate can also serve as formal evidence of students’ practical competence and strengthen their employability, particularly when applying for roles in which first aid training is valued or required. The training also helped students strengthen confidence and readiness to assist others during an emergency and a responsible attitude towards the well-being of others.
Throughout the course, students showed strong commitment and actively participated in the practical exercises. Many also returned on the morning of 11 October for an additional revision session before taking the certificate examination that afternoon.
The Department extends its sincere appreciation to Mr. Lee and Mr. Chiu from Hong Kong St. John Ambulance for their dedicated teaching and generous sharing of professional knowledge, practical techniques and real-life experience. Special thanks also go to Mr. Lee for voluntarily conducting the additional revision session and providing students with further support before the examination.
The Department commends all participating students for completing the intensive training and examination. We hope their hard work will lead to positive results and that the knowledge, skills and confidence gained through the course will support both their personal development and future careers.
