Recent court ruling opens the possibilities to allow gender changes on Hong Kong Identity Cards without needing full medical intervention, such as gender reassignment or gender affirmation surgery. In the SCMP article “Victory by transgender Hongkongers over ID documents sparks discussion on rules and timetable”, Dr. Diana KWOK, Associate Professor of the Department of Special Education and & Counselling, said the court ruling, despite future uncertainties, was the first step of an encouraging trend for discussion of transgender rights. She commented that there is a possible shift of paradigm, by defining gender from sex assigned at birth to gender identity. This shift would encourage discussions on trans people’s welfare and citizen rights in Hong Kong, with an inclusive lens.
