Dr Lo Wing Ka, Julia, Assistant Professor of the Department of Special Education and Counselling at EdUHK, together with Dr Yau Wing Kwong, JP, Chief Executive Officer of Environmental Association Limited, were invited to participate in the filming of the TV programme “Hong Kong United” on RTHK. During the programme, Dr Lo shared details about the project titled “Flourishing in a Butterfly Garden (幸福の蝴蝶園)”, which was implemented in collaboration with Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve under the Environmental Association. She explained that the project involved a nature-based social-horticultural intervention. Through this intervention, participating students learnt basic knowledge about butterflies and plants, assisted in managing the butterfly garden, and also experienced horticultural activities. Findings of the study suggested that the intervention supported significant improvements in physical health, mental well-being, and peer social support of the participants. The project team hopes to continue promoting this intervention across different communities in Hong Kong, dedicated not only to butterfly conservation but also to strengthening the bond between people and nature and to promoting better physical and mental well-being for residents.
