Welcome Message

The Hong Kong Institute of Education is very pleased to host The Third Forum for Presidents of Normal Universities in the Greater China Region. The National Taiwan Normal University hosted the Inaugural Forum in March 2012 with the theme of ‘Normal Universities in the Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau: Vision for the Future and Collaboration’. This was the first meeting of its kind for key normal universities in the Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau to jointly define the role of normal universities, consider their unique functions and values within a shared cultural and historical background, develop strategies in response to the changing needs of society, and form a network for research and collaboration. A Joint Message on promoting academic exchange and research collaboration was signed during the Inaugural Forum. Based upon this good foundation, the Central China Normal University hosted the Second Forum in October 2013 with the theme of ‘The Internationalisation and Informatisation of Higher Learning’. A second Joint Message agreeing to develop an online study programme exclusively for students of member institutions was signed by member institutions.

The coming Third Forum will provide a continuing platform for university leaders of normal universities to meet and share novel ideas on crucial issues and trends in teacher education development in the Greater China Region and beyond. Under the theme of ‘Educators for the 21st Century’, we anticipate that participating Presidents will share their insights on shaping the future of the region’s normal universities in face of the global challenges and opportunities, and on ways to support social transformation and human development through education.

On behalf of The Hong Kong Institute of Education, I would like to extend my warm welcome to all the participating Presidents and respective designated representatives from the Greater China Region, Asia and Europe. Their presence and participation will offer different perspectives to the Forum. We are honoured to have invited eminent speakers including, in order of appearance, Professor WANG Gungwu, Sir Graeme DAVIES, Professor CHEN Guangju, Professor CHANG Kuo-en, Professor GUO Weilu, Dr Gwang-Jo KIM and Dr Richard ARMOUR. They will share their views on the following sub-themes:
  • ŸEducators for the 21st Century: Asian Perspectives
  • ŸReinventing the Higher Education Curriculum for the 21st Century
  • ŸLearn Globally, Collaborate Regionally

I would also like to thank Mr PANG Yiu Kai, the Institute’s Council Chairman and Mr NG Hak Kim Eddie, Secretary for Education of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for their presence as the officiating guests of honour.
I trust you will find the Forum inspirational and your stay in Hong Kong enjoyable. I look forward to meeting you all at The Hong Kong Institute of Education in October 2014!
