Abstract

Liberal Studies of the New Senior Secondary Curriculum aims to broaden students’ knowledge base and enhance their social awareness through the study of a wide range of issues. To understand the pluralistic nature of the contemporary world around them, students need to learn to examine issues from a variety of perspectives, construct knowledge and develop their critical thinking skills in order to prepare them to confidently face any challenges of the future. To help students to become critical thinkers who can make independent informed decisions on issues that have relevance to their daily lives, it is essential for the teachers themselves to have a good understanding of the nature, the models and process on which critical thinking can be developed.

In this lecture, participants are exposed to the process of critical thinking development through examining a real life health issue. In the process, participants do not just identify the major problems and concepts behind the case only, but they will also attempt to analyze the case by referring to the process of critical thinking as advocated in the Toulmin Argumentation Process Model. Through this experiential learning approach, participants will evaluate their own learning as on whether their thinking is more articulate, logical and clearly structured. Towards the end of the lecture, participants are asked to identify the academic, operational and technical concerns regarding the process of thinking development they have just experienced.

Programme: General Educatural
Course: Being Chinese: Insights from Cross-cultural Psychology
Topic: Values and Morals

Dr. Emma BUCHTEL
Assistant Professor, Department of Psychological Studies
The Recipient of the Faculty’s Excellent Teaching Award 2013-2014

Abstract
EmmaBuchtel
In this 3-hour session I lectured on several models of moral development, starting with classic theories and going on to cultural-psychology criticisms. I then asked students to individually respond on a worksheet to a real-life cultural conflict dilemma (in which a recent immigrant to the USA was arrested for engaging in behaviour that appeared to be pedophilia but was encouraged by his culture of origin). I then randomly assigned students into groups to analyze why the conflict arose (using the moral theories), and engage in worksheet-guided critical thinking about what appropriate solutions would be if such a situation arose in Hong Kong. We ended with group summaries and an all-class discussion.
