It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to our Learning and Teaching Festival @HKIEd 2015.  With the theme “Emerging Practices: Learning and Teaching in Higher Education”, the Festival is organized by the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology (LTTC), in conjunction with Faculties, Departments and Academic Support Units of the Institute.  As it is in its third year of operation, I would also like to congratulate the Organizing Committee for launching this highly meaningful event annually.

The Festival 2015 provides a unique opportunity for our colleagues to share their emerging learning and teaching practices, which are derived from both classroom experience and academic research in a university environment.  Apart from keeping the participants posted of the latest philosophies, technologies and pedagogies, it will also facilitate mutual support among members of the Institute community.

At this sharing platform for learning and teaching excellence, we are very pleased to have the recipients of the UGC Teaching Award 2014, Mr. LIN Chun Han John of the University of Hong Kong and Dr. LIU Suk Ching Elaine of the City University of Hong Kong to join us as the keynote speakers of the Conference; and Prof. KWONG Yim Tze Charles of the Lingnan University to be the guest speaker of the Professional Development Seminar.  It is our honour to have them sharing their insights into good teaching practices and the engagement of student learning.  I am sure that our colleagues are looking forward to learning their success of delivering tangible commercial projects and knowledge of research studies out of their own pedagogical practices.

I would also like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Festival reviewers from sister universities.  They are: Dr. Eva Y. W. WONG of the Hong Kong Baptist University and Dr. HO Suk Ping Angela of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  We look forward to receiving their precious comments on further enhancing the Learning and Teaching Festival in the future years.

To those who are less familiar with the Hong Kong Institute of Education, I would like to share with you that the Institute has in recent years been undergoing a rapid transformation to become a leading university in the Asia Pacific region.  With the emphasis on applied research and research excellence, the Institute also focuses on and greatly treasures “Scholarship of Learning and Teaching”, for the purpose of promoting good teaching practices and enhancing student learning.  The core mission of the Institute is to nurture students to become caring and competent professionals through learning and teaching initiatives and activities.  We are offering programmes in Education and related disciplines of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral levels.  We hope that our students will transform from what they were upon admission, to better persons, and will be well equipped to become professionals who possess the right qualities to nurture and inspire future students and the people around them.

I wish the Festival 2015 a great success and all the participants a most fruitful experience and enlightening sharing at the event.  Thank you!
