Director, Centre for Learning, Teaching and TechnologyEmerging practice is a developing concept ranging from emerging, promising to best practices. The theme of our Festival – Emerging Practices: Learning and Teaching in Higher Education not only explores emerging technology, but also focuses on the change of teaching practices. The Festival serves as a platform for our colleagues to exchange different teaching practices in HKIEd and identify ones for further discussion and development toward best practices.

This year we have scaled up the learning and teaching event into a two-month Festival, a series of learning and teaching activities will take place from early February to the end of March. We hope that the Festival provides an opportunity for our colleagues and students to learn and support each other, to share good teaching practices, and to engage students in active and vibrant learning activities. I would like to thank the support of the senior management, Faculties and their Departments, the Graduate School, and Academic Support Units. Without your contribution and generous support, the Festival would not have been possible.

I would also like to express our sincerest thanks to our colleagues Dr. CHOW Cheuk Fai Stephen from the Department of Science and Environmental Studies (SES); Dr. SZETO Sing Ying Elson from the Department of Education Policy and Leadership (EPL); Dr. TSE Ka Ho from the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL); Dr. MA Qing Angel and Dr. WANG Lixun from the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML); Dr. CHENG Chi Keung Eric from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I); and Dr. MA Wai Wing Ada from the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE). They have kindly taken up the important roles as the team leaders to coordinate the parallel sessions on the Festival Conference.

My grateful thanks also go out to the members of the Organizing Committee, who have provided guidance and constructive comments to make the Festival possible. Furthermore, great appreciation should be given to our colleagues from the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology (LTTC), thanks for their great efforts to make the Festival run smoothly and efficiently.

Last but not least, may I take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to the 2014 UGC Teaching Awardees – Mr. LIN Chun Han John of the University of Hong Kong, Dr. LIU Suk Ching Elaine of the City University of Hong Kong and Prof. KWONG Yim Tze Charles of the Lingnan University to be our keynote speakers of the Conference and guest speaker of the Professional Development Seminar. Special thanks to the Festival reviewers – Dr. HO Suk Ping Angela of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Dr. Eva Y. W. WONG of the Hong Kong Baptist University, for participating in our Festival to share comments and suggestions in enhancing our Festival.

I wish you all benefit from this institutional learning and teaching initiative and look forward to hearing your sharing and experiences about the Festival. Thank you.
