Participating in the AIA Quest for the Champion Communicator 2005

Last year, a young teacher imbued with a passion for education, a desire for change and a determination to advance the development of education took the decisive step of leaving his own country to embrace a very different world. With the encouragement of his friends, the young man ventured to Hong Kong in order to absorb new knowledge and to learn to look at problems from new perspectives. The sight of the modern metropolis of Hong Kong was awesome for him. It steeled his determination to stay and pursue his dream. After repeated attempts, he finally enrolled in HKIEd's 4-Year Bachelor of Education (Languages) programme which brought him closer to his ideal. He is Eric Owusu from Ghana in West Africa.

Eric completed his Post-Secondary Certificate in Education in Ghana, a country of 20 million people. He is passionate about his country and determined to contribute to its development through education. Joy of Learning asked him his views on HKIEd and the education system in Hong Kong.

"Hong Kong is a modern city. Education in Hong Kong has been accorded the necessary resources and support. This is reflected in the range of teaching approaches we find here. In Ghana we still learn through the traditional method of rote memorisation. In Hong Kong I am acquiring different teaching skills to facilitate learning. I want my future students in Ghana to have access to such new teaching practices."
