The process of Learning Study employs an action research cycle where a chosen lesson is developed through clearly and precisely identifying the 'object of learning' and the 'critical features' needing to be grasped if the lesson as a whole is to be understood. Teachers working on the research lesson and staff from the Institute comprise the research team. Central to the process, the pupils' prior understandings are carefully assessed through pre-tests and interviews. This stage is crucial in developing teacher awareness of the needs of pupils in relation to the chosen topic. Through teaching, observation and analysis, the lesson is progressively refined and pupils' learning is progressively enhanced. The outcomes have so far been very encouraging, with pupils and teachers alike saying that they have really benefited from engaging in the Learning Study. No wonder we think it's VITAL.
"I think Lesson Study should be widely promoted, so that every teacher can experience it. I witness both my colleagues' personal enhancement and students' learning improvement. I feel that all the work is worthwhile." Mrs Cheng Li Wai-fun, former Mathematics
teacher, now Vice-Principal, Kowloon Technical School |
"In collaboration with HKIEd, we conducted "learning study" rigorously, to transform teachers into a team of learning-minded teaching staff." Mr Ip Sing-piu, Principal, |
