As a tertiary education institution focusing on teacher education,
the Institute seeks to recruit students with a genuine passion
for education. To achieve this, the General Suitability Interview
was introduced in 2000-01. Under this scheme, school principals
are invited to become "honorary" interviewers, helping
to identify gifted future teachers. Attributes that the Institute
looks for includes a commitment to the teaching profession,
good communication skills, care and concern for the needs
of others as well as creative and critical thinking skills.
At the end of the summer 2006 application period,
we saw an encouraging upsurge in the number and quality of
applications for the 2006-07 degree programmes. A total of
16,639 applications, an increase of 26 percent over 2005-06,
were submitted through the Joint University Programmes Admission
Scheme (JUPAS), competing for the 352 student places available.
Of these applications, 2,433 ranked HKIEd as their top priority
under Band A. This figure represents a rise of 52 percent
when compared to 2005-06. Standards too were higher, the mean
Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination scores of the students
admitted soared 11.3 percent against the previous year. The
number of non-local students admitted also surged 130 percent
to 39 students when compared to the year before.
During the year, the Institute has worked hard on the introduction of a Core Curriculum for the four-year Bachelor of Education (Honours) programmes in 2006-07. The new Curriculum aims to provide students with greater programme flexibility and choice in meeting their professional studies needs. The Curriculum consolidates discipline knowledge, reinforces professional knowledge and extends to General Education, while firmly embedding Field Experience as a core aspect of the programme. Students will benefit from the greater breadth and depth of this programme together with its broader perspectives for professional development. The Curriculum also seeks to enhance students?professional and whole person development.
In a bid to build a solid language foundation among its students, the Centre for Language in Education initiated an English Immersion Camp for all Year 1 Bachelor of Education students, prior to the commencement of the academic year. Through active communication both in a classroom and social setting, the Camp provides intensive English language support to freshmen.
