What we aspire to achieve has to go back to
why the Institute was established in 1994 - to create a university-level
institution dedicated to the education and the training of
professional teachers; and to make it a leading institution
in the Asia Pacific region. The goal remains unchanged, only
that the context within which we are operating has seen major
changes. These include:
 |
The nature of programmes has
been transformed from sub-degree, certificate level courses
to mainly degree and postgraduate courses. |
 |
The profile of students has been transformed
in that all incoming full-time undergraduate students
are at matriculation level. |
 |
The profile of staff has been transformed.
Our academic staff now actively engage themselves in scholarly
and research activities, with an emphasis on the needs
of schools in Hong Kong. |
 |
Our new curriculum is at the forefront
of international standards of best practice in teacher
education. |
 |
The student body has developed a strong
sense of identity and belonging to the Institute. |
 |
Campus life is notable for its friendliness
and vitality. |
The current situation represents a phenomenal
transformation in less than a decade and we now demonstrate
most of those features which have been associated with successful
teacher education programmes (Levine, 2006). If we maintain
the same momentum, I envisage in about five to seven years'
time, the Institute will be recognised as a world leader in
teacher education.
