Empowering Students and Teachers with AI Literacy and STEAM Competency through Profiling and Enhancement (Project Code: 05400)
Background
The recent rapid improvement in the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) and
the widespread application of AI in a wide variety of areas have provided strong arguments for the importance
of AI literacy: to be able to make good use of AI for education, in workplace and even to shape the future AI-infused
society, it is crucial for students and teachers to acquire a certain level of competency in AI. Students and teachers
need to grasp sufficient understanding of AI, to reflect on the impact of AI on society, and feel comfortable using AI.
Students and teachers of our University, furthermore, will benefit from knowing more about authentic assessment and
formative assessment in the era of AI. Typical components of AI literacy that students and teachers should acquire include:
· Understanding of AI concepts;
· Ethical responsibility;
· Confidence in interacting with AI.
Competency in STEAM (namely Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) is closely related to AI
literacy. On the one hand, AI can be considered as a fast-growing instance of technology to be adopted for the interdisciplinary
use under STEAM. On the other hand, AI itself shares similarity with STEAM: it naturally touches upon at least concepts in science,
engineering and mathematics. Nurturing ones' AI literacy, therefore, can be one way to enhance their STEAM competency. Typical
components of STEAM competency are:
· Concepts in computational thinking
· Perspectives in computational thinking
