Visit to Mei Ho House: Experiential Learning in Primary Humanities Education
On 29 September 2026, students from the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) Primary Humanities Programme participated in an educational visit to Mei Ho House, an important heritage site that preserves the history of Hong Kong's first generation of public housing. The visit provided an authentic experiential learning opportunity, enabling student teachers to connect classroom knowledge with real-life historical, social, and community contexts.
We were fortunate to have Lawyer Mr. Chong Yiu Kwong to be our docent throughout the guided tour. Beyond sharing the historical significance of Mei Ho House and its role in Hong Kong's social development, Mr. Chong generously demonstrated effective techniques for leading groups of students during educational visits. Through his use of storytelling, questioning strategies, observation prompts, and visitor engagement techniques, our student teachers gained valuable insights into how field-based learning experiences can be transformed into meaningful educational opportunities.
The visit not only enhanced participants' understanding of Hong Kong's cultural heritage and community history but also served as an important professional learning experience. Through guided reflection, students considered how heritage sites such as Mei Ho House can be incorporated into Primary Humanities education to foster inquiry, historical empathy, cultural awareness, and a stronger sense of belonging among primary school learners.
This meaningful learning experience highlighted the powerful relationship between experiential learning and reflective practice. As future teachers, our PGDE(P) Primary Humanities students were encouraged to reflect on how authentic community resources can be integrated into their teaching, enabling primary school students to learn history, culture, and citizenship through direct engagement with the living heritage of Hong Kong.
