Story-telling is for Everyone

Ada Lin- Bachelor of Education in Information and Communication Technology, Year 4

External Vice President, 8th EdUHK SAO Wofoo Leaders’ Network (WLN)

To conduct service-learning activities for low-income children and families, I have devoted myself to the Kwai Tsing District Story-telling Scheme. In the past three years, I have been actively involved in various posts, from a storyteller to an advisor, these changes represented an escalation in my involvement.

“I’m moving to another district, but I’ll come back when there’s a chance”, whispered a 9-year-old boy who was engaged to all story-telling sessions I helped to deliver every Saturday. This was the most touching moment throughout my three years of service.  Being able to witness the happy faces of my audience and instilling positive values such as Love and Care, Inclusiveness, Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, and Innovation have kept me moving forward. It was a life-changing experience which I sought joy and presence. I felt what I   have been doing was meaningful, and I am glad to have experienced it all.

As a new-comer, I used to be extremely nervous when having to do story-telling in front of a group of 20 children. I picked up the techniques gradually and moved towards designing warm-up games and parent-child handcraft activities like drawing, making origami and playdough. I felt that I am now more compassionate, mature, and benevolent.

Moreover, I am proud to share my invention of a new story-telling database, which helps students to find books that match their interest, without being compelled by geographical restrictions.

By taking small steps, we can raise awareness in helping the low-income group and keep boosting our vision.
