MIT PDP Introduction Seminar 2026
On 3 July 2026, the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology (MIT) successfully held the Professional Development Programmes (PDP) Introduction Seminar 2026. The event featured two expert-led sessions designed to equip local secondary school teachers with cutting-edge pedagogical insights.
Dr Ng Tsz Kit Davy commenced the seminar with his session, "AI literacy for educators". And Dr Yuen Man Wai Steven delivered an illuminating talk entitled "An introduction to mathematical modelling in secondary schools".
Participants were introduced to a professional development programme designed to enhance teachers’ AI literacy, covering AI tools, ethical considerations, and practical classroom integration while fostering students’ creativity and critical thinking. The programme combines theoretical foundations with hands-on activities, including lesson planning and the exploration of authentic school-based practices.
The seminar also highlighted the role of AI in supporting mathematical modelling through data visualisation, interactive learning materials, and real-world problem solving. Demonstrations showcased how AI can assist teachers in developing learning resources, analysing complex datasets, and creating engaging classroom experiences. Case studies, including a travel-choice model comparing high-speed rail and air transport, illustrated the practical application of mathematical modelling and AI-driven analysis.
In addition, participants learned about ongoing professional development opportunities in mathematical modelling and AI education, as well as the growing range of resources available to support innovative teaching practices.
The seminar provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, encouraging educators to embrace emerging technologies to enhance mathematics education and prepare students for a rapidly evolving digital world.
