New Ways Forward in Teacher Education

Upon their admission, successful applicants will study the equivalent of two years in each institution, with an array of choices from English language, literature and culture to English language teaching methodology and educational studies. They are also required to pursue the programme in an English-speaking country for one semester, and perform teaching practice in local schools. Graduates of the programme are exempted from the Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (LPAT) and eligible for registration as qualified English teachers in Hong Kong.

The joint programme is an excellent example of how the strengths of the two institutions can be combined to enhance the quality of teacher education. In view of the keen demand for qualified language teachers among local schools, Dr So Kwok-sang, Registrar of HKIEd, envisaged that graduates of the joint programme will enjoy excellent prospects and be keenly sought after in the market.

At a press briefing held on 13 December 2005, Mr Lee Shu-wing, Director of Registry Services of CUHK described the joint programme as "a perfect platform for our two institutions to enhance our mutual understanding and to build a collaborative culture. We hope to collaborate more in future in different areas, to capitalise on our complementary strengths. This will bring benefits not only to our students, but also make a positive difference to the education sector at large."

As at February 2006 when applications closed, the programme had attracted 244 applications for its 40 places under the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) and non-JUPAS channel. Prospective students will commence their degree programme in September 2006.
