During an interview with the Joy of Learning, Dr Tang once and again stressed that the value of education lies in a basic respect for each student as a unique individual. For him "school improvement" is fundamentally "people improvement", where qualitative rather than quantitative measurement is pertinent. Based on his belief that young teachers will have to face a rather complex and in no way one-dimensional working environment in future, he is keen to expose his students to people with entirely different backgrounds and from different professions. |
On 6 February 2006, the editorial team had the chance to sit in one of Dr Tang's lessons, where a celebrated film director-turned-businessman, Mr Cheung Kin-ting was invited to exchange his views with his students. Mr Cheung was a successful Hong Kong film director, producing many movies which were big hits in the local and overseas markets. He put forward his opinion on education from the perspective of a pragmatic parent and businessman. Such a view could pose a culture shock for the student teachers. Dr Tang nonetheless stepped in from time to time to challenge Mr Cheung and his students to consider questions from yet another perspective. |
