From Broadcasting Studio to Classroom

Dr Ronald Tang spent his college days up to 1979 in the then Hong Kong Baptist College, during which he took up part-time teaching to cover his own expenses. It was also during this period that he developed his interest and skills in guitar playing. Upon graduation, he entered the teaching profession. Two years later, he landed the dream job envied by many young people at that time - a full-time DJ at RTHK. As a DJ, his job was not only confined to playing music in the broadcasting studio. It also required tact and communication skills to reach out to his "audience" through the airwaves and in live stage performances. The flamboyant environment in which Dr Tang worked opened his eyes to highly talented and learned people as well as stars with faded glories. A nagging question kept crossing his mind ¡V "Is being a radio DJ my destiny? Will there be something different out there for me?"

His questioning led him to leave RTHK and try working as record and variety show producer. Inside him, however, there remained a void and passion yet to be fulfilled. In 1994, Dr Tang took the decisive step of pursuing a Master of Arts degree at the University of Hong Kong. After he confirmed his commitment in opting for an academic path, pursuing further studies at tertiary institutions became a natural course of development and he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in Education from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2005. His academic career also formally started when he joined the HKIEd as a Teaching Fellow in summer 2005.
