Professor Lung Ying-tai, a renowned scholar in the Chinese communities worldwide, visited the Institute in mid-May. The forum held in her honour was not only regarded as the "event of the year" within the Department of Chinese, but it also became a favourite talking point of the entire campus.

The Power of Works First Inter-varsity English Speaking and Debating Competition (Nanjing Normal University vs HKIEd) Dr Jasmine Luk Lecturer, Department of English

Through this forum, the Department of Chinese hopes to stimulate interest in the study of culture within the Institute, creating a cultural atmosphere and, through reflection, enhancing sensitivity to culture within the HKIEd community. To prepare the campus for the forum, a working group within the Department of Chinese put up special billboards introducing the background of Professor Lung. In conjunction with the Library, the Department also disseminated information on her literary works and press clippings. A web page was also tailor-made to provide similar information on the internet for the promotion of reading.

Throughout the two-hour session of questions and answers, the audience was immensely charmed by Professor Lung's persuasive and piquant oratory, not to mention her gentle and graceful disposition. She captivated the floor by leading them to think through topics as varied as civic awareness, travel culture, the under-privileged, poverty problem and global perspective etc. Our complacency was challenged by her thought-provoking questions.
