Liberal Studies and its Implication
A simple example like this one illustrates the complexity involved in Liberal
Studies teaching; it also demonstrates the considerable additional workload
the new curriculum will involve for both students and teachers.
The key issue is the breadth and depth of knowledge of individual teachers, their on-going efforts to update themselves, the collaboration of teachers across different disciplines, the ability to motivate students to be active learners and the new concepts of school-based performance assessment.
Prof Bernard Luk, Vice President (Academics) and Dr May Cheng, Deputy Head
of Science Department announcing the launch of Liberal Studies programme
at a press conference.
In brief, Liberal Studies asks for a paradigm shift in teaching and learning which starts with a change agent - the teacher. On different occasions and in focus group discussions that the Institute organised in connection with Liberal Studies, principals and teachers alike have expressed concerns as to how best they could enhance teaching skills for Liberal Studies in order to benefit students most effectively.
