For the Symposium

On Arrival and Departure (non-local participants only)
The Symposium will arrange for ground transportation between Hong Kong Airport and the official hotel. Please provide us with your flight schedule when it is available, and we will contact you at a few days before the Symposium to finalize the transport arrangements.

On Symposium Days (for all participants)
The Symposium will provide a free shuttle service between the Hotel and the Symposium venues on 12 and 13 January, exclusively for the Symposium participants. Please assemble at the Hotel Lobby at 8:00 am each day. Our delegates will be there to take you to the bus. The bus will depart at 8:10 am sharp.
The Hong Kong Institute of Education also provides coach service for staff and students. The coach operates every 10 or 15 minutes, running between the MTR University Station and the campus from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm on weekdays. The flat rate is HK$3 and only Octopus card (see Remarks below) payment is accepted. Symposium members are also allowed to use this service on 12 and 13 January 2011.


General

Hong Kong has a highly developed and sophisticated transport network. Most of the daily journeys are on public transport, including MTR, buses and taxis.

MTR, or Mass Transit Railway, is a common mode of public transport in Hong Kong, offering efficiency and affordability. Its track covers almost all towns in Hong Kong, and it provides speedy through train services to major cities across the Mainland China. Single journey tickets and Octopus card reloads can be purchased at vending machines at every station.

Bus service in Hong Kong are provided by franchised companies. There are over 700 routes, each with a fixed path, fare, service hours and schedule. Passengers are required to pay the fare when boarding, and all buses accept payment by either Octopus card or coins.

Taxis in Hong Kong are color coded according to their operating areas:
- Urban taxis (Red) serve almost all destinations throughout Hong Kong.
- New Territories taxis (Green) serve only the New Territories and specific roads in Lantau, including the airport..
- Lantau taxis (Blue) serve all destinations in Lantau only.

Remarks:
The Octopus card is a rechargeable contactless smart card. It is the most widely used electronic cash system for transactions (public transport, retails, vending machines, etc) in Hong Kong. It can be purchased at the ticket counter of every MTR station.
