The Professional Partnership
Networker

Dear community partners and friends,

It is gratifying to see that the new academic year kicks off with a crowded campus, fresh faces, and exciting plans. Our department continues to thrive as a cohesive and influential community, this year with the ongoing support of valued, long-serving EPL colleagues transitioning from full-time affiliation to adjunct roles, and a new diverse, energetic and strong group of colleagues joining us.

In this newsletter, we aim to provide you with an overview of our recent endeavors and achievements over the past several months across our three strategic areas: 1) teacher learning and development; 2) educational leadership and school improvement, and 3) school diversity and inclusion. We are also excited that a new round of programme enrollment for the next academic year has begun, which covers the Aspiring Principals programme, three Masters degree programmes, all which feature innovative learning, professional networking, and flexible delivery. These efforts underscore our unwavering commitment to conducting relevant research and engaging in impactful teaching and development activities.'

We look forward to a fruitful academic year ahead, and invite you to be an integral part of our journey.

Upcoming Programmes and Events

Aspiring Principal Programme in 2023/24 is Now Open for Applications

The EDB has authorised the Asia Pacific Centre for Leadership and Change (APCLC) at the EdUHK to run the Aspiring Principal Programme in 2023/24. This programme comprises the “Needs Analysis for Aspiring Principals” (NA) and “Preparation for Principalship Course for Aspiring Principals” (PFP). Applications are now being invited for participation in the NA exercise and the PFP course. Engagement in the NA and PFP will be valuable for leaders at all levels in schools, and particularly those who are aspiring to undertake a principalship role in the future.

New Minor programme "Teaching and Learning in International Schools" for BEd students

Starting from the 2023/24 academic year, EPL will host the Minor in Teaching and Learning in International Schools (TIS) for Bachelor of Education (BEd) programmes. This Minor paves the way for BEd students to pursue teaching careers in international schools in Hong Kong and abroad, in local schools with internationalised curricula, in schools across Asia that are opening international sections, and in international schools globally. BEd students who successfully complete the Minor in Teaching and Learning in International Schools can earn the International Baccalaureate (IB) Certificate in Teaching and Learning.

Workshop on “Fostering Resilience and Well-being in Teaching and Learning”

For frontline educators (principals and teachers), emotions and well-being are critical, not only for their personal and professional development, but also for facilitating holistic development of students. With increasing risks and uncertainties from sociopolitical changes and the global pandemic, they are facing tremendous stress which has affected their self-efficacy and well-being. Strengthening educators’ well-being could improve school effectiveness, efficacy, and enhance the all-round development of students. We would like to invite you to join our workshop on 21 October. This workshop focuses on enhancing the well-being of educators during turbulent times in an effort to promote effectiveness, efficacy, and student development in high stress situations.

New Research

The Missing Link: Principal Well-being Literacy and Its Drivers and Outcomes

Project Investigator: Dr Junjun Chen

As school principals are the gatekeepers for all school initiatives, they need to be positioned firmly at the center of school well-being promotion research to strengthen their well-being literacy. This would help principals take care of themselves and model this for staff and students. It would also encourage principals to search for and deal with well-being-related information, including its use and decision-making to establish well-being promotion schools.

The study aims to develop and validate a Principal Well-Being Literacy Instrument, investigate the state of principal well-being literacy, identify influential individual, institutional, and contextual drivers of principal well-being literacy, and explore whether and how principal well-being literacy mediates the drivers and outcomes of principal well-being.

“Social Justice Leadership for Learning”: A New Conceptualization of School Leadership

Project Investigator: Dr Sedat Gümüş

The literature provides compelling evidence that school leadership matters for improved student experiences and outcomes. It is evident that schools need an increased focus on planning, organising, and supervising curriculum and instruction, through leadership for learning, to ensure the learning of all students. At the same time, educational policymakers, researchers, and practitioners have a longstanding interest in improving the schooling experiences of disadvantaged and marginalised students, including students from low-socioeconomic status backgrounds, immigrant students, and students with special needs, etc. Accordingly, the concept of social justice leadership has become prominent in educational theory and research.

This study aims to ascertain specific leadership for learning practices enriched by the social justice perspective in three participating jurisdictions (Hong Kong, China; Israel; and Texas, USA), determine the role of contextual factors in the formation and implementation of such practices, and develop and validate a social justice leadership for learning scale (SOLE-S) for each jurisdiction, as well as a common scale for future comparative studies.
