PPN Resources

As we continue to work through COVID-19, EPL will provide online resource materials on our Professional Partnership website. There, you can find all the videos used in our recent Webinar entitled Leading School Innovation in Times of Emergency. Feel free to use these for PD purposes in your own school or organisation. As a taster, please enjoy this video on leading through crises by Chair Prof. Walker: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyYw1l7-zN0

Forthcoming are briefs on research and teaching development for our stakeholders (teachers, leaders, policymakers). These will be based on projects completed by EPL staff members.

New experiental learning initiative

Experiential Learning (EL) is quickly becoming a key focus of EPL's work with schools and in-service teachers and leaders, as well as pre-service teachers. Typically, EL gives students the opportunity to learn through hands-on experiences as part of the formal and nonformal curriculum. To support this, EPL is happy to announce several initiatives. Through its initiative on Virtual Reality (VR) for at-risk students, the Department aims to support partner schools that serve students from less privileged backgrounds by developing teachers capacity in planning instruction that incorporates VR. EPL, along with the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, has initiated the planning process for a new MA in Leading Experiential Learning Activities. If approved, the MA will recruit participants for the 2021-2022 school year. EPL's undergraduate student group, EdUDreamers, will begin planning initiatives to support schools and NGOs in the delivery of EL opportunities. To support our staff and students in incorporating EL, we are pleased to announce that Prof. Colin Beard--a world authority on EL--has joined EPL as an Honorary Professor. We will provide more details on these initiatives. Meanwhile, if you are interested in details of any of these, please send us an email: epl@eduhk.hk

Collaboration Opportunities for Knowledge Development

The following new projects are inviting participants.

An Exploration of the Role of Leadership in Successful Systemic Improvement in China

Project Investigator: Dr. Qian Haiyan

This study will examine the relationship between leadership, educational infrastructure and system-wide improvement through case studies of selected innovative system reform initiative implemented in three mainland Chinese regions – Shanghai, Anhui and Guizhou. The study aims to deconstruct the innovative system reforms carried out in these provinces and examine the role of leadership in designing and deploying infrastructure necessary for successful systemic change. The study will select 4-6 municipal/provincial-level or district-level reform initiatives, such as commissioned administration (weituo guanli, which usually involves the commissioning of high-performing public schools to take over the administration of weaker ones), district-level teacher learning collaboration (which mainly refers to an established mechanism for expert teachers to network across schools and exert leadership beyond their immediate school level), as innovative cases for focused research.

Investigating Alternative Middle-Class Choice: A Qualitative Study of Homeschooling in Two Chinese Cities

Project Investigator: Dr. Lee Tsz Lok Trevor

This project aims to provide in-depth accounts of how Chinese homeschooling parents in Hong Kong and Taipei perceive and make sense of their homeschooling choice. Using data primarily derived from in-depth interviews with parents from a minimum of 30 homeschooling families and supplemented by further observations of regular homeschooling activities during the day in about six to eight families from the larger respondent pool in the two cities, this project will capture the nuance of alternative middle-class choice of childrearing in the Chinese context.

Investigating the Occupational Well-being of Hong Kong School Principals and Influential Psychosocial Risk Factors: A Mixed-methods Approach

Project Investigator: Dr. Chen Junjun

The occupational well-being of school principals is crucial to the effective operation of schools. Given the current unpredictable educational environment affected by COVID-19, research into understanding and identifying concrete ways to support the well-being of principals seems timely and urgent. This project firstly aims at validating two robust instruments for evaluating principals’ well-being and influential psychosocial risk factors, namely, the Assessment of Quality of Life and the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire. The second aim is to investigate principals’ occupational well-being and influential psychosocial risk factors at work in Hong Kong.

Reconsidering Academic Entrepreneurialism in East Asia: Diverse Voices and Critical Insights from the Academic Profession of Flagship Universities

Project Investigator: Dr. Tang Hei Hang Hayes

The research will examine the impact of the ‘entrepreneurial turn’ in higher education on the everyday life of academics at flagship universities in three global cities - Hong Kong, Seoul and Tokyo in East Asia. It will reconsider the interactions between universities and the academic profession and the consequences of these interactions for institutional change in higher education.

The research aspires to bring the impact of facilitating the development of an effective knowledge exchange framework which delivers public benefits for different external stakeholders of universities in the East Asian context (Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea).

It also creates and transforms knowledge gained from research into practical tools.
DESI researches how diversity impacts on education, equity and inclusion through its interaction with social, political and economic conditions. Teacher professionalism—the capacity to make informed educational judgements about what is in the best interests of students and their communities—is influenced by ever-evolving and interactive institutional, social and political contexts. Teachers are expected to meet diverse and sometimes competing local needs and must also be responsive to global developments and concerns. This project aims to enhance the impact of teaching and research on teacher education both locally and globally
