EDNU April Research Seminar II: Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for children: empirical support and applications Date: 22 Apr 2015 (Wed) Time: 12:30 - 14:00 Venue: HKIEd Tai Po Campus D1-LP-08 Speaker: Dr. Randye Semple (Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California) Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Children (MBCT-C) is a 12-session group psychotherapy for elementary school-age children suffering from stress, anxiety, and other mood disturbances. Dr. Semple will explore theoretical mechanisms of change in cognitive therapy and in mindfulness-based approaches, and discuss how mindfulness can change how children respond to their own thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. She will briefly describe the development and aims of MBCT-C, some adaptations necessary when working with children, and the 12-session program. Dr. Semple will present the research support for MBCT-C, as well as recent and current studies on two other programs that have been adapted from MBCT-C for use in school settings: Mindfulness Matters! and Mindful Learning - Mindful Living (ML2). Randye J. Semple, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. Her clinical research in the area of mindfulness with youth has been at the forefront of growing international interest in mindfulness-based therapies in mental health care for the past decade. |
