Colexification of Dragon and Thunder: A Feature of Proto-Sino-Tibetan and the Origin of Dragon

This project starts with investigating the current distribution of dragon-thunder colexification in Sino-Tibetan languages. The reasons why modern Sino-Tibetan languages colexify or differentiate dragon and thunder will then be addressed, in terms of the linguistic variables and non-linguistic variables. Lastly, this project will reconstruct the linguistic forms of dragon and thunder at different historical periods to further support the validity of the thunder/lightning origin of dragon. The present project attempts to prove with linguistic evidence from Sino-Tibetan languages that dragon of the Sino-Tibetan region is the mythologized form of thunder and lightning.

Building a digital lexical template to date dialectal split of Sino-Tibetan languages lacking written record and trace human migration

The study of pre-literate societies relies significantly on oral history, which, while valuable, can be susceptible to distortion over time. Historical linguistics provides a methodological framework to test and refine such narratives through systematic language comparison. The primary objective of the present study is to design and deploy a digital research tool that addresses the divergence time of the Sino-Tibetan languages, a task that has traditionally relied on oral history. However, conducting comprehensive comparative studies of the whole Sino-Tibetan language family, covering approximately 500 languages with vast typological diversity and predominance of under-documented languages, presents an impractical challenge for a single team. Therefore, this study developed a collaborative standardized tool for the systematic accumulation, and at the same time a dedicated database for the analysis, of linguistic data pertaining to these languages, with ongoing contributions from linguists worldwide. The project thus successfully launched the Sino-Tibetan Database of Language Splits (漢藏語分化時間數據庫): http://47.113.104.70:8001/index.html (operational on external server) or http://stsplit.eduhk.hk (internal server, setup is underway by OCIO). This platform serves as a structured, collaborative repository with the explicit aim of enabling researchers to:
1.Estimate divergence timelines of dialects and languages lacking extensive written records.
2.Identify major geographic dispersal centers of speech communities.
3.Trace likely migration routes based on linguistic evidence.

清代《說文》名家朱駿聲（1788-1858）著有《六十四卦經解》，學者多因其形式類近於資料彙編而認為此書只是集舊說之作，這使《經解》的價值歷來被忽視。其實在承繼之餘，朱氏創建亦多，本計劃將深入發掘《經解》的研究價值。
