For First-Year-First-Degree (FYFD) students admitted in 2024/25 or before
Exemption from LER for English
Eligibility
- Achieving the required scores in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Note 1) or equivalent prior to programme entry;
- At least 80% of the courses within the student’s curriculum are offered with English as the Medium of Instruction (EMI) (Note 2).

Application Procedures
1. Please complete the online application form for English LER exemption:
2. Applicants should attach a softcopy of the IELTS test report form to the online application. If the softcopy provided is incomplete or unclear, the applicant may be required to present the original test report form to the Centre for Language in Education (CLE) for verification.
3. The application will be processed only after all requisite documents have been received.
Application Period
Applications for exemption from English LGR should be made by 30 November of each academic year.

Exemption from LER for Putonghua
Eligibility
Exemption from Putonghua LER will only be granted to students who achieved the required level in the Putonghua Shuiping Ceshi (PSC) (Note 3) prior to programme entry.

Application Procedures

2. If applicants do not take the PSC at the Putonghua Training and Testing Centre (PTTC) of the EdUHK, applicants should attach a softcopy of the PSC certificate to the online application. If the softcopy provided is incomplete or unclear, the applicant may be required to present the original certificate to the Centre for Language in Education (CLE) for verification.
3. The application will be processed only after all requisite documents have been received.

Note 1: Only Paper-based/Computer-based IELTS Academic Tests taken at a test centre in one sitting will be accepted. IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date.
Note 2: Only General Education (Foundation), Major (including Final Year Project [Honours Project/Capstone Project]) and Language Enhancement (credit-bearing) domains will be counted toward the EMI percentage of the programme. Chinese-major students should pay particular attention to this requirement and check the EMI% of their programme before making any applications for English LER exemption.
Note 3: Non-local students from Mainland China may take PSC at provincial-level, autonomous region-level or municipality-level recognised by the State Language Commission; local students can only take the state-level PSC as stipulated by the State Language Commission.
